An antiquarian or antiquary is one concerned with antiquities or things of the past. Also, and most often in modern usage, an antiquarian is a person who deals with or collects rare and ancient antiquarian books." Source: wikipedia
Founded in 1982, The Book Club of Washington's aims are similar to those of many predecessors such as 'The Club of Odd Volumes' (Boston, 1887), The Rowfant Club (Cleveland, 1892), and the Book Club of California (San Francisco, 1912), but its activities reflect the varied interests and tastes of admirers of the book worthy and the book beautiful in Washington.
David and Natalie Bauman founded the company in 1973 with their first investment in a box of 18th-century imprints, a love of literature and history, and a sense that this could be an interesting way to make a living. Nearly thirty-five years later, with the addition of some forty dedicated and talented researchers, salespersons, creative personnel and office associates, Bauman Rare Books has evolved into one of the finest and most respected antiquarian book firms in existence today. (As much as I adore this book dealer, I have not yet had the pleasure of actually purchasing anything from them, not yet anyway.)
The Brattle Book Shop, located in Downtown Boston and established 1825, features two floors of general used books, outdoor sale tables, and a third floor with a premier collection of rare and antiquarian books. (I love this book shop! I stumbled upon it while vacationing in Boston a couple of years ago and I cannot remember how many books I purchased, but I know my carry on weighed a lot more when we flew back to Seattle. This was also the place where I found, and lost, a folio version of Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven. Thankfully, I was able to get my hands on a copy a few months later, but I learned a tough lesson and that is never to listen to
Oak Knoll Books was founded in 1976 by Bob Fleck, a chemical engineer by training, who let his hobby get the best of him. Somehow making oil refineries more efficient using mathematics and computers paled in comparison to the joy of handling books. Oak Knoll Press, the second part of the business, was established in 1978 as a logical extension of Oak Knoll Books.
Today, Oak Knoll Books is a thriving company that maintains an inventory of about 20,000 titles. Our main specialties continue to be books about bibliography, book collecting, book design, book illustration, book selling, bookbinding, bookplates, children's books, Delaware books, fine press books, forgery, graphic arts, libraries, literary criticism, marbling, papermaking, printing history, publishing, typography & type specimens, and writing & calligraphy - plus books about the history of all of these fields.
The world’s largest online marketplace for books, lists over 110 million new, used, rare, and out of print books from thousands of booksellers. This great selection delivers value for all: readers find bestsellers, collectors find rare books, students find textbooks, and treasure hunters find books they’ve been seeking forever. (I CAN say that I have purchased numerous books from Abebooks, from all over the world, but I was disappointed to learn that they are now owned by Amazon. Of course, this will not prevent me from purchasing from Abebooks, but it does seem to cheapen the image for elitists bibliophiles such as myself.)

The original Powell's Books was born in a former used car dealership and to this day the store maintains a no-nonsense, industrial feel. One place, though, has been reserved for comfort and elegance. Dark wood shelving, decorative lighting, antique tables, and our most valuable — and beautiful — books, all make the Rare Book Room one of the most pleasant destinations in the store.
