The Smiling Pit Bull

“Sometimes, I feel discriminated against, but it does not make me angry. It merely astonishes me. How can any deny themselves the pleasure of my company? It's beyond me" - Zoe the Pit Bull

Gooddog101_10 Good Dog 101 - Cristine Dahl (owner of Seattle Dog Works)

Cristine Dahl incorporates studies of animal behavior and humane treatment into an approach called Learning Theory. Filled with in-depth, step-by-step instructions, and organized by behavior problems, it explains Learning Theory from start to finish. (This book should be a part of every dog lovers library).

Pitbullplacebocovers_12 The Pit Bull Placebo - Karen Delise

"At perhaps no time in history has mankind been as ignorant of natural canine behavior as we find ourselves at the beginning of the 21st century. The human/dog bond—the most complex and profound inter-species relationship in the history of mankind—has now been reduced to a simple axiom: Breed of dog = degree of dangerousness." (excerpt from The Pit Bull Placebo) - This is a must read for dog owners of EVERY breed because no breed is safe where Breed Specific Legislation is concerned.

"Delise provides common-sense solutions for public safety and sheds light on current media bias involved in the reporting of dog attacks. A compelling and thorough analysis of reckless owners and dangerous dogs in America. A must-read for any public official concerned with increasing public safety." Ledy VanKavage, Senior director of Legislation and Legal Training, ASPCA

Culture_5The Culture Clash: A Revolutionary New Way to Understanding the Relationship Between Humans and Domestic Dogs - Jean Donaldson

"The Culture Clash depicts dogs as they really are - stripped of their Hollywood fluff, with their loveable 'can I eat it, chew it, urinate on it, what's in it for me' philosophy. Jean's tremendous affection for dogs shines through at all times, as does her keen insight into the dog's mind. Relentlessly, she champions the dog's point of view, always showing concern for their education and well being. The Culture Clash joins a very distinctive group of books and it runs at the head of the pack. Like Karen Pryor's Don't Shoot the Dog, The Culture Clash has a refreshingly original perspective. Like Gwen Bohnenkamp's books, The Culture Clash cuts to the chase - no if's and no but's - here's the story - now educate your dog!" Dr. Ian Dunbar

Patmc_6 The Other End of the Leash: Why We Do What We Do Around Dogs - Patricia McConnell

This is one of the many great books Patricia McConnell has written and which I have read and re-read. Early in the book it will become evident that McConnell has a great love for these furry four legged creatures that we come to love so dearly and welcome into our homes and hearts. It is also obvious from the three letters in her title (ie. Ph.d) that she is qualified to speak about canine behavior and to address certain unwanted behaviors that every dog owner has struggled with at some point. In the end, it becomes apparent that McConnell's aim is to bring understanding to dog owners every where and create harmonious bonds between canine and humans.

Other great books by Patricia McConnell are:

  • For the Love of a Dog: Understanding Emotion in You and Your Best Friend
  • How to be the Leader of the Pack...And have Your Dog Love You For It. ("How to" booklets from Dog's Best Friend)

Janis_5 Dogs Bite: But Balloons and Slippers Are More Dangerous - Janis Bradley

A must read for anyone who is tired of the media hype involving dog bites and the breeds most often targeted. Janis Bradley will put everything in perspective; everything including the dangers of wearing slippers.
