Mini meals are the way to go...

Fruitsveggies Last week I felt a surge of motivation hit me and I decided to cook (that alone takes a lot of motivation for me, who has a wonderful husband who cooks), but to then pack and consume those mini meals, now that is really awe inspiring! Well, I did it and I feel absolutely marvelous! I know you are probably thinking that it takes more than one week to start to feel the effects of eating a healthy diet - but it doesn't you know. I agree that some of my emotions/feelings may be more psychosomatic than anything else, but I also think that the fact of the matter is that I have taken control over my life AND this has made a whole heap of difference to my outlook on life and myself.

Up until last week, the daily grind I participated in started at 7am, which is far too early for me to even think about food, let alone find the time to consume it. By 10.45am I was starting to get peckish, but refused to eat because lunch was just around the corner AND I didn't want to ruin my appetite. I may, or may not bring some lunch to work, and being that there is really only a cafe or a Thai restaurant to choose from near my office, meant that I would either order a tuna salad sandwich or a serving of green chicken curry. I am well aware that both of these meal choices are absolutely chock full of hidden calories & fats, but what is a girl supposed to do. Well, this was what had led to my urge to make my own mini meals.

I was feeling great after only one week of eating these mini meals, then I stumbled upon the previously posted website, SparkPeople.com and this just continued to inspire me to change. I have found, yet again, that consuming small meals throughout the day really does have a huge impact on weight, especially for those of us who rarely eat enough, then are overcome with hunger pangs by the end of the day, only to inevitably reach for the wrong foods - just because you hear the voice inside your head telling you how STARVING you are! To be perfectly honest, I doubt that there are too many people in the Western world who really know the meaning of the word, but that is a post for another time and will probably end up on my general blog, Quoth The Raven.

So back to the point of this and what is that point? The point is that any person who has made a choice to diet doesn't want to feel deprived or starved, and we all want to increase our metabolism which will in fact assist us in losing weight. The best way to do this is by consuming small meals every 3-4hrs, which will convince your body that it is not on one of those 'starving diets' but that it is well nourished with all the right foods...oh, and don't forget to exercise.

I have since started documenting all the foods I consume on SparkPeople, (here is just one page) which apart from being a great way to see how much you are eating, and what exactly you are eating, you can also determine if you are in fact getting all protein, carbohydrates and fats that our bodies need to survive and thrive.

On the road again...

There was  a time in my life about 12 months ago when I would cook all my meals on a Sunday and pack them so I could consume about 5-6 mini meals per day. Actually, it was my trainer, Adriana Medina from Funkey to Fitness, who first got me onto the idea and you would be amazed at just how beneficial it is in assisting with weight loss and crazings. After sticking with this regime I found that I was never hungry, and by consuming food every 3 hours meant that my metabolism was always encouraged to work for me, rather than against me.

Mini_meal_2 As beneficial as this dietary routine was it didn't take me long to slip back into my old ways and succumb to my normal food habits of missing breakfast, having a latte for morning tea, getting extremely hungry by 11am, and bingeing at lunch, then not consuming anything all afternoon until I arrived home around 5.30pm, only to fill up on whatever was available, and then finish the evening of with dinner around 8.30pm. Now it doesn't take a genius to figure out that this kind of regime would have nothing but devastating effects on my weight, my enery and my moods.

It took me awhile to get back into the groove, but after waking up tired, dragging myself through the day to finally collapsing with extreme tiredness around 9pm, I finally realized that I want more from my life AND my body. I wanted to wake up from a full nights sleep with excitement and energy for the day ahead. I realised that something needed to change and it needed to start with my erractic eating habits.

It has only been a week, but I have been consuming mini meals that consist of 3 oz. of chicken or fish and a serving of vegetables. I have to say that I am loving the routine and the convenience that these mini meals have brought into my life. I am actually feeling healthier already!

Food! Glorious Food!

I have to admit that in my current living situation, nearly 2 weeks without internet access at home I am finding it extremely difficult to constantly update my food diary. But all is well and I have been eating smaller meals, more often and never have to deal with cravings.

The internet should be up and running on Friday so I will be back up and running.

Diet Diary - the road to success

Calorie_king_1

I have come to the conclusion, yet again, that I need to document everything that passes through my lips. I do have an organiser with a really cool program that I purchased here. But at the moment with my home internet connection still not connected, I find that my organiser is still perched on the desk. I also think it would be a good move to document my diet diary to the world for added accountability. I must add the Calorie King program is a little easier as I can input the calorie amount that I wish to comsume for the day and it will help me to meet it, and not exceed the limit. I can also document any exercise I do and it will deduct the calories from my total, and it has a comprehensive food data base. For $30 it really is a dieters best friend!

So lets start today:

Tuesday August 30

Meal 1: 1 x Wet Cappucino

Meal 2: Chicken noodle soup with roll

Meal 3: Steak, vegetables and mashed potatoe

and plenty of water, water and more water...

CalorieKing.com also has a fabulous food data base just in case you are curious to find out what exactly you are putting into your body?

Meal Plan

This is the meal plan that I am currently on:

Meal 1 - Apex Vanilla Shake

Meal 2 - Veggie Burger / Banana

Meal 3 - Apex Vanilla Shake

Meal 4 - Pasta (1 cup) with Vegetables and sml dinner roll

Meal 5 - Chicken, Rice and Vegetables

Total: 1895 calories

Initially, it was a little difficult going from 2-3 meals a day to 5 mini meals but with a little organisation I managed to do it. The difficulty was less to do with the meal plan, and more to do with battle in my mind. I had to get used to the idea of not being hungry. Bad habits needed to be changed, for so many years I have associated weightloss with hunger, whereas if you are doing things properly you don't need to deprive yourself to reach/maintain a healthy weight. I am finally learning this.
