What do these two photos have in common? Correct, they are both wearing fur.
The only difference between these two photos is that J.Lo chose to wear fur for the purpose of making a fashion statement, whereas, the animal did not have a choice in donating it's fur in the brutal fashion that it did!
This photo was taken just before, or just after the poor creature was pummelled against the ground to kill it, or at least to make it unconscious so the animal can be skinned with as little struggling as possible.
As quoted from Peta: 'the animals are still alive and struggling desperately when workers flip them onto their backs or hang them up by their legs or tails to skin them. When workers on these farms begin to cut the skin and fur from an animal's leg, the free limbs kick and writhe. Workers stomp on the necks and heads of animals who, fighting for their lives, struggle too hard to allow for a clean cut. When the fur is finally peeled off over the animals' heads, their naked, bloody bodies are thrown onto a pile of those who have gone before them. Some are still alive, breathing in ragged gasps and blinking slowly. Some of the animals' hearts are still beating five to 10 minutes after they are skinned. One investigator recorded a skinned raccoon dog on the heap of carcasses who had enough strength to lift his bloodied head and stare into the camera, with only his eyelashes still intact.
Before they are skinned alive, animals are pulled from their cages and slammed against the ground; workers bludgeon them with metal rods, causing broken bones and convulsions but not always immediate death. Animals watch helplessly as workers make their way down the row.
"Just how low can you go?" I decided to watch a video of this brutality and was utterly disgusted! I am not easily disturbed, but this video certainly made an impression on me. I couldn't watch all of it at first but forced myself as I don't want to live in ignorance of the suffering that goes on around me. It is only in observing the offensive practices around us that we will be forced into taking action.
The other question I have to ask is, "How many animals need to die before Jennifer Lopez has enough fur coats in her closet?" I know there are numerous other celebrities that wear/promote fur but every time I flip through a magazine it seems to be Jennifer's lovey face peering back at me, usually surrounded by an awful lot of fur.
I realized that I should do something in the fight against fur, and decided that I should contact Peta to pose the question of why they haven't brought the subject of J.Lo and her fur up, and "what do you know?" While I was checking out the Peta website to send them an email, there is J.Lo staring back at me!! It appears that I am a little late and they have already started a new campaign. The campaign video can be viewed here; be warned that the footage is disturbing!
On a personal note I would really like to give Jennifer the benefit of the doubt, and just believe that she really is oblivious to the cruelty involved in the fur industry, but I find it hard to believe that anyone would think that the handling of fur is done in a humane manner? There is really no excuse for wearing fur when the faux fur looks like the real thing, only without the cruelty. Who will be next on the campaign trail...maybe the Gotti boys?
